Noise From The Basement

Retro Video Games, Vinyl Records, and Other Nostalgia

The Noise From the Basement is Electric Trains

For me the original “Noise From the Basement” wasn’t video games but electric trains. In the late 80’s, yes the era of the NES and all its contemporaries and predecessors, I had a train layout in my basement. I know that seems more like something from 1958 than 1988, but it’s true. Of course it was an old Victorian house, and the basement was creepy, and filled with spiders and bugs, and humidity that rusted the tubular Lionel track. To me it was like a haven for my imagination, and dreams of what I could someday add to my layout. Even though my layout only had two scale sized people on it, I used my imagination to make up stories about them, and about the residents of the houses and workers at the factories in my layout town.

Midwest Gaming Classics 2022- The Return to Spring and Normalcy

So when the news hit in early February that the event was coming back to Spring, and as the biggest show yet, I was pretty happy. Of course life had different plans and that same weekend was both my oldest son’s Prom, and my youngest Pinewood Derby council level race. So I thought there was a good chance I wouldn’t be able to attend MGC for this show. Luckily, the Prom being a Friday, and the race a Sunday, meant I could sneak in a Saturday trip to MGC, but I had to prepare for a long, and tiring weekend to do it.

8-Bit Friday’s: The NES Conquest – Part 1

To start off I had 33 NES games in my backlog, but on further review of what I had in my backlog “queue” bin, it turned out I had 34 games, as one snuck through being logged into my backlog spreadsheet. My goal for this weekend was to push through a minimum of 10 NES games, or a maximum of about 15 or nearly half the games in the backlog. Surprisingly, I got through 20 games by Sunday afternoon, but it was no easy task

8-Bit Fridays: The NES Conquest 2

I don’t think there’s anything about this game that I can say that hasn’t already been said. Great game, great colorful graphics that look good in HD, and wonderful humor. So many YouTube shows, and podcast have covered this one I don’t know what else I can say, that they haven’t. All I can do is agree this one is an unforgettable classic.

8-Bit Friday’s: The Atari 2600 Conquest

Welcome to another 8-Bit Friday, this time is the 2600 Conquest. Basically, I’m going to try to play 23 Atari 2600 games that have been in my gaming backlog since 2018, as well as using the Retron 77’ my wife… Continue Reading →

Happy New Year’s, and post Valentine’s Day to you all! Welcome to my first 8-bit Friday of 2022, and a Blazing one it is. Not because it’s hot out, no it’s been a cold weekend, it’s because I bring you… Continue Reading →

Are you not covering game content anymore?

This was a question I got out of the blue on Facebook messenger through Noise From the Basements Facebook page over the weekend. It was from a longtime follower on Facebook, as well as of the blog back when it was on Blogger.com. If you’re reading this you know who you are, thank you for the question and hope this works as a belated answer not only to you but my other readers.

Model Showdowns: It’s a Twin (Engine) Thing

The F7U-1 Cutlass vs S2F Tracker This isn’t some “what if” matchup like you’d see on YouTube. Although both these aircraft, the F7U-1 Cutlass, and S2F (later S-2) Tracker, would have served alongside each other in U.S. Navy carrier operations… Continue Reading →

Model Showdown: The F2A2 Buffalo vs the F-80 Shooting Star

No this isn’t going to be some YouTube video about an impossible matchup of two aircraft that never met in actual battle.  This is the story of two model aircraft, from two different model makers. One is a model maker… Continue Reading →

Midwest Gaming Classics 2021

It’s Monday November 8th, 2021 and I am a tired, tired man. I spent this weekend at Midwest Gaming Classics, and its the 4th time I’ve attended in the last six years. Considering one year was canceled due to COVID… Continue Reading →

2021 Gamers News Years Resolutions

2020 has been the slowest year of gaming for me yet. You’d think with COVID going on gaming would be a way of life, but it’s been slow even on what I’ve bought. If you read my blog you may… Continue Reading →

Alternative Investing: The Collector Paradox

Buying into a hobby or some other material item as an investment, isn’t new to the 80’s with electric trains or now days with retro video games. In the late-90’s and early 2000’s comic books were the investment fad, and that market crashed, and crashed hard, leaving many investors deeply in the red. In the 70’s the big investment trend was antique’s, mostly furniture and knick-knacks.

2020 Gamers News Years Resolutions

Following 2018, 2019 gaming wise has been another slow gaming year, and like 2018 compared to previous years my game purchases and consumption of said games, hasn’t been the highest. I did add a PSP to my collection, as well as a PS Classic, and Atari handheld. Of course last but certainly not least I added a long awaited Moon Patrol arcade machine to my collection without much time to play it.
